NEW LITURGY PRACTICE NIGHT

Starting Sunday, December 4th we will begin trying out a new liturgy setting.  For those in the congregation who would like the chance to become better acquainted with this music before we use it at a service, there will be a practice session (led by the Senior Choir) on Wednesday, November 30th, at 7:15pm. INTERGENERATIONAL PROJECT OUTREACH

The Fellowship Committee and Sunday School are planning to make cookies and deliver boxes of them to Dixon's Fire & Police Departments on Saturday, December 3rd at 10am – 1pm.  We need your help so please check out the sign up sheet in the gathering area.  There are many ways to help - We appreciate it!  ~~~ Fellowship Committee

COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING EVE

On Wednesday, November 23rd  at 7pm the Community Thanksgiving Eve Service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Dixon.  They will follow the service with the traditional pie social.  Please share a pie and the evening with the community.

CHRISTMAS ADVENT SETUP

We need volunteers to help set up the Nativity Stable, the Christmas trees and decorate our church home.  Please contact the pastoral office or sign up in the gathering area if you are interested in helping on Sunday, November 20th immediately following the Thanksgiving Dinner Potluck.

THANKSGIVING DINNER POTLUCK

Please join us on Sunday, November 20th  in the fellowship hall after the 11am service for a Thanksgiving Dinner.  The Fellowship Committee will provide the turkey, stuffing, potatoes and beverages.  There is a sign up sheet in the gathering area so we have an accurate count for purchasing the turkey/or turkeys.  Also specify what your dish to pass is – side dish, salad, dessert or rolls/bread.  We will also need a set up crew on Saturday, November 19th at 10am and a break down crew on Sunday, November 20th (after the dinner).  The sign up sheet for both is in the gathering area.  Bring a friend and a thankful heart!!

TRUST, TALENT, TREASURE AND TIME

DISCIPLESHIP GATHERING AT IMMANUEL LUTHERAN, DIXON

Bishop Gary M. Wollersheim would like to invite you to attend their annual "Discipleship Gathering" which will be held at 7pm with registration at 6:30pm on Thursday, November 10th at Immanuel Lutheran, Dixon, IL. The theme for this year's gathering is Communication and the Congregation: What Would Jesus Tweet?  Whether you are a beginner in the newer communication world or already using more intermediate communication tools in your congregation, the Discipleship Gatherings will provide helpful information to further communicate God's word in this new technological world!

TO THE CONGREGATION OF ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH

A forum will be held on Sunday, November 13, 2011 and Sunday, December 4, 2011 to have a conversation as to how to move forward as a united church community.  Included in the discussion will be the number of worship services offered at St. Paul. The congregation will be asked for input as to what might be the advantages/disadvantages of combining worship services.  Your ideas and thoughts are needed. Please join this discussion on one or both of the Sundays noted. Each forum will be held in the Fellowship Hall between services: 9:30 am to 10:30 am. CHURCH MUTUAL SAFE CHURCH RISK MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP

St Paul will be sponsoring a workshop to be held on Wednesday, November 9th from 6:30 -9pm.  The workshop will be led by Church Mutual Insurance Company.  They will be guiding us through setting up a Safe Church program.  This program is open to all members of the congregation.  We are especially encouraging all those that work with the youth in our church to attend this event.

ORGAN RECITAL

St. Paul Lutheran Church cordially invites you to attend the dedicatory recital of the newly refurbished organ this Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 7pm.  It has been a long hard process but we have reached the end of our journey.   Richard Hoskins is the professor of organ at Carthage College, Kenosha, WI.  He is the organist for St. Chrysostom's Church in the Chicago suburbs.  He will provide at least an hour of music demonstrating the versatility of the organ and the variety of musical forms.  Following the recital, there will be refreshments served in the fellowship hall on the lower level.  Stay and meet with the artist and enjoy the fellowship.

BLESSING OF THE BEASTS

A Blessing of the Beasts Service will be held on the church lawn on Sunday, October 9th at 1pm.  Please bring your "beast" on a leash (or otherwise confined) for a special blessing by Pastor Janet.   Bring a snack to share.

HISTORY NIGHT - PART 2

Due to the overwhelming success of the first History Night, please join us on Tuesday, October 4th at 6pm for a continuation of our History night.  The Rev. Chris Stienstra will be leading us again.  At this event, we will remember the important history, traditions, leaders and important events in the life of St. Paul Lutheran Church.  Please bring an appetizer or dessert to share and sign up on the sheet in the gathering area.

LET'S CELEBRATE A BOUNTIFUL HARVEST AND HELP STOCK THE DIXON FOOD PANTRY

The Dixon Food Pantry is always in need of food items and supplies because the need is great.  After each service on October 1 and 2, we will hand out paper bags, with an attached list of needed items for the Pantry.  Please fill these bags with some of the items on the list, then return the filled bags to the church during the weekend of October 8 and 9.  Let's try and fill the Gathering Area with bags of food.  Thank you.   ~~~~The Social Ministries Committee

BREAK COFFEE CAKE

Come join us on Sunday, October 2nd between services  in the fellowship hall to break coffee cake.  The LYO will be supplying the coffee cake for you to taste and sample.  Then the young people will be taking orders for these scrumptious coffee cakes!  Each coffee cake costs $10.00 and the money will be used to defray expenses for the LYO to be part of the National Gathering in New Orleans in July of 2012.  Orders and money will be due to the LYO by Sunday, October 9th.  (Please note, these coffee cakes freeze well and can be used after defrosting.)  Come and sample our wares!

BIBLE PRESENTATION/BLESSING

We have a great new curriculum to Spark interest in our Sunday School!  PreS - 2nd grade classes will be using the new Spark Story Bibles.  Each 3rd - 6th grade Sunday school student will be presented their own Spark Bible (NRSV) at the 11:00 am service Oct. 2.  Thank you to the St. Paul Ministries Fund for sponsoring the Bibles this year and the saints from the past who provided for future generations!    ---the Christian Education Committee

WELCA NEWS

The 23rd Annual Convention of Northern Illinois Synod Women of the ELCA will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Orion, Illinois on Saturday, September 17th.  The theme:  Neighbors Uplifting Neighbors—Go and Act Boldly" Two choices of workshops you wish to attend are:  Ask the Bishop, Rocky Boy, Farm2Fork, Nese Msseemmaa (Her India Trip), or Sharon Wadle (Tanzania Women).  All women of St. Paul are invited to attend.  Registration fee is $30.00, scholarships of $15.00 available upon application.  Participant registrations are due September 1st.  Registration and scholarship application forms are available at the office.  This will be a day of excitement, fellowship and learning.

Share your blessing of good health so that others may have a brighter tomorrow…Donate Blood!  Thursday, September 15th - 12 noon to 5pm.  Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are preferred!  Be sure to have plenty to eat and drink before you donate!

THE COMFORTERS

The Comforters will resume meeting on Wednesdays at 9am until 12 noon this fall.  Please join us on Wednesday, September 7th for our first meeting.  Everyone is welcome even if you do not know how to sew.

HAND BELL & SENIOR CHOIR

Just a reminder that the Hand Bell Choir rehearsals will resume on Wednesdays at 5:45pm beginning September 7th and Senior Choir Rehearsals will also begin again on Wednesdays at 7:15pm starting today, September 7th.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL

Please join us on Sunday, August 28th from 2-4pm for an ice cream social.  We are inviting our neighbors to join us and Culvers will be providing the ice cream.  We are asking our church family to bring the toppings.  Please sign up on the sign up sheets in the gathering area as to what you are willing to bring and hours you can help serve.

FLYER DAY

An all church flyer day will be held on Saturday, August 27th at 10am.  We will be passing out flyers inviting our neighbors to our Ice Cream Social and to Sunday school and worship.  Please sign up on the sign up sheets in the gathering area if you can help.

On Sunday, August 21st following the 11 am service, there will be a meeting for all confirmation parents to discuss the fall program.

GOING AWAY POTLUCK FOR ORGANIST

A potluck lunch for Arthur Felts will be held on August 14th after the 11am worship service in the fellowship hall.  We will have a cake and there will be a basket for a "Card Shower."  He is leaving for his new home in Ecuador no later than August 23rd.  Please come and say farewell to our organist and friend.

SUPPORT GROUP

On Thursday, August 4th at 6pm, a support group will be offered for anyone who has been a victim of abuse.  The group will be led by Donna Ripley, a psychotherapist, who works with abuse victims.  There will be no cost for this group.

WELCA NEWS

There will be a WELCA Board Meeting on Tuesday, August 2nd at 1pm. Since most circles are not meeting during the months of July & August, this is to remind you of two events coming up. On Thursday, August 18th at noon, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Falls will have their annual luncheon. Those who plan to attend must sign the reservation sheet on the WELCA bulletin board before August 11th. Attendees are asked to bring their Bibles and the August copy of "Lutheran Women Today." The 23rd Annual Convention of Northern Illinois Synod Women of the ELCA will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Orion, Illinois on September 17th. Registration fee is $30.00, scholarships of $15.00 available upon application. Participant registrations are due September 1st. LYO - Splash

At Strom's, 1131 4th Avenue from 4 to 6pm on Sunday, July 24th. All youth in grades 6-12 are invited and parents are welcome to make a splash with us. Please RSVP to Peg at 815-652-4735 so we will know how much pizza to order.

Organ

There will be a demonstration of the new organ capabilities presented by Dr. Stephen A. Steely on Sunday July, 24th at 2pm for members of St. Paul.  The official dedication concert will be held at a later date.

When You Are In the Hospital

Please call the church so the Pastor can visit and pray with you.  Either call the church or instruct the hospital to call our church office.  Recently adopted privacy laws prohibit pastors from looking over hospital admission's lists to find the names of members.  Now the church relies entirely on you or the hospital to call the church office so we know you or someone you love is in the hospital.  Please let us know.  Thanks.

Adult Forum Bible Study - Sundays between the services

Please join Pastor Janet in the Social Room each Sunday between the services for an Adult Bible Study.  Right now they are studying the Book of Galatians.

6th Grade Acolyte Training

Those who are going into 6th grade may become acolytes.  To show you the correct way of flame-throwing or lighting the candles, we will have a training class on Sunday morning between services on July 24 or July 31.  You need to attend only one of these.  If you cannot attend either, contact Peg at 288-2757 or 440-0003.

Pastor Swarbrick Slide Presentation July 17th

St. Paul's will have a slide presentation of Pastor Swarbrick's ministry between the services on Sunday, July 17th. 

O Blood Drive July 14th 12-5pm

St. Paul Lutheran is hosting an O Blood Drive on Thursday, July 14th from 12-5pm.  Anyone who is at least 17 years old, weighs at least 110 pounds and is in general good health should be eligible to donate blood.   For more information or to schedule an appointment, call the church office at 815-288-2757.  

Installation of Pastor Janet Wittenmyer

Please join us for the installation service of our new Pastor Janet L. Wittenmyer on Sunday, July 10th at 3pm in the sanctuary with a cake reception to follow.

Petunia Parade & Food Booth

Please join us for the annual Dixon Petunia Parade and St. Paul's Food Booth in our church parking lot from 11 am until the end of the parade.  We will be serving hot dogs, popcorn and water.

NIS Youth Assembly - June 16th

The Synod's Youth Assembly will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2011 at Augustana College, Rock Island.  This is where the Synod's LYO members elect officers and plan for the next year.  The youth delegates to the Synod Assembly may attend the sessions and stay with fellow youth in the dorms.  If you are interested in this leadership opportunity and want to meet fellow Lutheran youth from around our Synod, contact Peg Miller for more information.

Pentecost Sunday - June 12th

Celebrate Pentecost at St. Paul.  Red is the color of this festival Sunday.  Let's make St. Paul    aglow with RED.  Wear red and show the joy of the Spirit.  Bring a red geranium to recognize the birthday of the church.  Monday after the service, we will plant these around the church grounds to share the SPIRIT!!!!  The Spirit sends us out to bring others to Christ; so bring a friend to worship on that day.

Dixon Church Softball League

Confirmation Rehearsal/Dinner - Wednesday, May 18th 5pm

On Wednesday, May 18 at 5 pm, the class will rehearse in the sanctuary for the service.  Confirmands and at least one parent are EXPECTED to be there.  After practice, we will share dinner in the fellowship hall.  We will be having BBY Chicken.  The cost will be $10.00 per person (Confirmands will not be charged.)

New Pew Cushions Dedication - Mother's Day Weekend

You may have noticed a change in the sanctuary.  Over the past few weeks Kay Alter has padded the seats.  This was done as requested by Barbara Weidman, long time member of St. Paul.  Her family honored her wishes with the memorial to accomplish this task.  The cushions will be dedicated, appropriately on Mother's Day weekend (May 8th) at all the services.  Come, give thanks, enjoy the comfort, (also, it takes away an excuse for not coming to church - the pews are no longer uncomfortable!)

WELCA Blanket Sunday

All women and men are urged to donate money to buy blankets for World Relief or contribute money to help send them our comforters donated each year by our ladies on Sunday:  May 8.  There are marked containers in the front and the back of the sanctuary for your contributions.

May Friendship Day

Ladies, Ladies!  The Ladies of the Dixon Churches (Dixon Area Church Women United-we are members) will be celebrating May Friendship Day on May 6th.  We will have a 12 noon meal prepared by the ladies of St. Patrick Catholic Church in their Holloway Center at 612 S. Highland.  After which we will have a program entitled "Living Our Friendship, Passing on the Key".  The tickets may be purchased from Gerry French-one of our Key Women - for $6 by May 1st.  Anyone who has a Least Coin Offering (put in a penny for each time you pray for peace) may bring them at this time.  Also any donation for the Dixon Area Food Pantry may be contributed at this time.  Please plan on attending if you are able.

Hope: Quake 2011

Sixteen youth and adults will represent St. Paul at the Quake at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells from April 29 through May 1, 2011.  Please help support them with your prayers and, if you can, with some financial gifts.  All who donate to our travel and adventure will be invited to join us between services on May 8 (Mother's Day) to talk with us one on one.  We will share our adventure with you as you share your gifts with us!  In advance, thank you very much.   If you wish, use the envelope provided, the sheet with the list of participants and a check made out to St. Paul LYO or cash.  If you want to designate an individual you are supporting, feel free to circle that name.  If you wish to support the group, just turn in an unmarked list.

Second Congregational Meeting

Please join us for a second congregational meeting on Sunday, May 1st between the worship services in the fellowship hall where a report will be provided as to the proposal presented at the Annual Congregational Meeting in regard to a "Restricted Reserve Operating Fund".  A congregational vote will be taken at that time as to whether or not to accept the proposal of this Special Committee.

 

Update From The Call Process Committee

We are getting closer to finding a new Pastor. The Council met the candidate, Janet Wittenmyer, and voted their approval.  Please plan to attend a Special Congregational Meeting to visit with Pastor Janet that will take place on Palm Sunday, April 17th after the 11 am worship service with a potluck luncheon for you to become acquainted and ask her questions.  Please bring a dish to pass and table service for this occasion.    A congregational vote will be taken at that time as to whether to accept her as our new Pastor.

Central Conference Jr. High Roller Skating Sunday, February 27th

All St. Paul 6th – 8th grade youth and your friends are invited to roller skating at White Pines from 1 – 3 pm on Sunday, February 27th.  We will carpool from the church, leaving at 12:30 pm and should return to the church by 3:30 pm.  All of the Central Conference churches have been invited so you'll get to meet a lot of other Lutheran youth.  Cost for skating is:  $3 for admission, $1 skate rental or $3 inline skate rental.  You may want to bring $5 for a snack if you'd like. Bring your money with you to the event.

NIS 2011 Congregational Resourcing Event (CRE)

The Northern Illinois Synod 2011 Congregational Resourcing Event (CRE) will be held on Saturday, March 19 at Kishwaukee College.  Everyone is encouraged to attend.  Brochures and registration forms are available on the gathering area table or by going to www.nisynod.org/cre.  Please return registration forms including checks made payable to Northern Illinois Synod for $17.00 per person which includes lunch to the office by March 1st.

NIS WELCA Retreat

All women of St. Paul are invited to a one day retreat at LOMC in Oregon on Saturday, March 26th called "Sacred Places", a Bible Study led by Inez Torres Davis.  Registration and coffee: 8:15 -9am.  Cost: $30 which includes morning coffee, lunch, snacks and materials.  Please fill out a registration form which are on the gathering area table and return it to the church office with your check by Wednesday, February 23rd. 

Central Conference Jr High Sledding Day/Roller Skating

Council Member Installation Service

The new and returning council members and officers will be installed this Sunday, February 6th at the 8:15 am service.   Following that service will be an informal fellowship to greet them.  May God bless our new council for 2011.  Please join us to welcome our new members in the fellowship hall.

Souper Bowl of Caring

The youth are collecting nonperishable food items and cash and coin for the Souper Bowl of Caring super bowl weekend, February 5th and 6th.  Half of the collection will benefit the Dixon Food Pantry and half will benefit the ELCA World Hunger Appeal.  Please bring your donations super bowl weekend and drop it off in the soup pots located at either entrance to the sanctuary.  Thank you for your support to feed the hungry.

The Annual Congregational Meeting-January 30th

This meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 30th at 9:30 am - 10:45am between the services in the Sanctuary.   All confirmed members who have a record of communing and contributing at St. Paul over the past 2 years are eligible to vote.  Preschoolers through sixth grade students will meet in the upstairs Sunday school areas for music, a short DVD and then work together on making valentines for shut-ins.  Gerry French and Rachel Hallquist will be in charge.  Seventh and Eighth grade and high school students are encouraged to attend St. Paul's Annual Congregational Meeting with their families.

NIS Lutheran Ski Day

Monday, January 17 (Martin Luther King Day).  We leave the church at 7:30 AM and return to the church by 8:30 PM.  Cost is $53 (includes ski/board rental, lift ticket and lunch) or $33 (lift ticket and lunch) if you have your own skis.  Sign up on the youth board next to Gerad's office and fill out a medical release form.  Medical release forms and money are due by January 5.  All are welcome!  Children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Parents, adults:  if you would be interested in driving and chaperoning, please call Gerad at the church office at 815-288-2757.

Jr. High Sledding Event

Sunday, January 9 from 1 – 3 PM at LOMC.  We'll carpool from the church leaving at 12:30 pm and returning at 3:30 PM.  FREE!!!  Welcome 6th – 8th grade students and parents.  Parents, we need drivers.  Please call Gerad Von Holten if you can help out.  Hot chocolate and snow tubes will be provided, please do not  bring a sled.  Sign up by January 5th.
